About Me
I’ve worked as a professional writer for over 20 years as editor, journalist and copywriter. During this time I’ve worked with big names, such as the Guardian Media Group and the Times Educational Supplement, and on smaller titles and projects, too.
So I’m comfortable writing brochures, whitepapers and speeches as well as filing copy for national newspapers, business magazines and content-led websites. I learnt my trade as a reporter on the big weekly technology title of its day, Computing, and editorship of DEC Computing followed, then other roles in the technology press. These included deputy editor of Network Week and re-launch editor of Business & Technology.
By then the Internet was happening - and changing all the publishing rules. I became content editor of two early websites, ITelligence and Workthing. Here I learnt what works on the Internet and, just as important, what doesn’t! Crafting copy to engage the time-starved web reader, attracting online readers and using content to boost traffic are all critical skills for the web writer and editor.
A more recent web role - careers editor on TES Connect - revolved around using content to help build a community of teachers. It was a great place to get to know the very inspiring school community - and to sharpen up my online marketing knowledge. Using search engine optimisation and social networking to promote content was a priority and during our first year we won Best Business Website of the year in the AOP awards.
But, whichever medium or audience I’m writing for, the objective stays the same: choosing the right words and tone for a particualar audience to ensure that a story has maximum impact and that the message hits home.
